Many people decide to live elsewhere for the winter; some just leave for a week or so on vacation. Either way, if your home will be left unattended for an extended time this winter, make sure you take the proper precautions, so you return the way you left it.

Protect Your Pipes

One of the most common issues with an ill-prepared home is a burst pipe. Though, when living at home in the winter, the temperature is generally comfortable, you may decide to lower your thermostat while you’re away. In sub-freezing temperatures, this could mean danger to your pipes.

When water freezes, it turns into ice and expands; it’s one of the significant causes of pipes bursting, which means a big mess, property damage, and money out of your pocket. Prevent this by shutting off the main water valve and emptying your pipes of water.

Before you leave, drain your toilets of the remaining water and leave faucets open to allow pressure to escape.

Check Alarm Systems

Another safeguard for your home is your various alarms. If you have a home security system, make sure it’s working, and you can access it while you are away. Also, test your carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors, and replace batteries if needed.

Keep a Reasonable Temperature

Depending on your comfort preferences, you will likely be keeping your home at about 65-75 degrees during the winter months. You don’t need to retain this level while you’re gone but should keep it around 55 degrees minimum.

If you live in a rental property or homeowners association, there may be requirements for the minimum temperature. Check your lease or agreement before leaving to make sure you satisfy this rule.
